The Cave Diver Sign Planner
Choose the mark before the cave chooses the funeral.
The Sign Planner helps you pick a marker approach for common The Cave Diver situations: unknown forks, lure drops, soft skill walls, hard tombs, journal pockets, and safe-spine confirmations. Signs persist across deaths; improvisation under panic does not persist as wisdom. This tool slows the decision just enough.
Interactive section on this page: use the on-page sign strategy planner to select the situation you are in and read a recommended marker approach. Then apply that approach with your personal meanings from Sign Legend.
Systems background lives on Signs. Campaign integration lives on Route Planning.
How to use the planner step by step
Sign strategy planner
Pick the situation you are in to get a recommended marker approach.
Place a clear junction marker before committing. Note which branch you will try first, then leave space for a second mark if that branch dies.
- Stop in a safe pocket or wait until after a death.
- Open the interactive planner section on this page.
- Pick the situation that matches the junction, not the one that flatters your bravery.
- Accept the recommended approach—usually entrance marking first, severity second, push later.
- Place or update the in-world sign at the decision mouth.
- Tick related readiness in the Progress Checklist only after a cold audit.
If you cannot stop safely, you are too late for planning. Escape or die, then plan.
Situations the planner is built to sort
Unknown fork: mark before scout; limit depth to reverseable space. Active unfinished scout: keep the mouth honest that work remains. Promising continuation: confirm reverse still exists; schedule push body. Soft dead end: skill or stamina wall; revisit later without shame. Hard dead end: do not re-enter without new info; see Dead Ends. Hazard lure: glamorous shortcut energy; mark severity high via Branching Paths. Journal nearby: read only when stable; translate into risk updates with Journals. Safe spine: confirm return path so horror does not erase retreat knowledge.
Planner rules that prevent garbage marks
Never invent a one-off glyph because the planner output felt “not special enough.” Map planner recommendations onto your existing legend. Never mark only at the deepest corpse position. Never run the planner while both hands are already committed to a one-way posture trap. Never treat planner text as an automatic in-game input—you still hammer the sign.
Demo practice plan
In the live Demo, force yourself to run the interactive planner at the first three forks even if you think you remember them. Compare your impulse mark to the recommendation. The difference is usually ego. Use the Demo Walkthrough session types so planner practice does not become endless menu staring.
Before August 12, 2026, your goal is fluency: situation in, legend out, sign placed, body moving. Full-game branches will be longer; the decision ritual should already be boring.
Linking planner output to body roles
Scout body: Unknown / Active scout outputs. Label body: convert Active into Soft/Hard/Hazard/Promising. Push body: only consumes Promising on a clean spine. Audit body: resolves planner-versus-reality conflicts. Journal body: uses Journal nearby then returns to severity picks.
Death and Bodies explains why role-based deaths are productive. The planner makes roles concrete.
When the planner disagrees with your feelings
Trust the more conservative mark until a cold audit says otherwise. Folklore pressure about the flower and paraplegia cures pushes aggressive feelings. Cartography prefers borders. If needed, take a break with Review expectation pages rather than forcing a heroic fork.
Desk setup tips
Second monitor: planner + legend side by side. Single monitor: planner on phone; game focused. Party of friends in chat: speak planner situations aloud so shared language stays aligned with Map pages and Tools.
Also keep Controls Cheatsheet ready; planning is useless if you cannot pause to place the mark.

Closing
Open the interactive sign strategy planner, pick the truth of the junction, and write that truth at the mouth of the rock. Do this often enough and the cave’s persistent-sign fantasy becomes a real strategy—one readable mark at a time—on the long crawl toward the flower.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to common The Cave Diver questions.
Does the planner place signs in the game?
No. It recommends an approach. You still place and maintain in-world signs yourself.
Should the planner override my Sign Legend?
No. Map its recommendations onto your legend meanings so the language stays stable across bodies.
When do I open the interactive planner?
In safe pockets or after deaths—especially before scouting a new fork or reclassifying a lure.
What if I keep ignoring the conservative recommendation?
Then treat that as a checklist problem. Schedule label and audit bodies before another push body.
